Surfing reveals another side of the Maldives. Across the archipelago, Indian Ocean swells meet coral reefs to create long walls, fast sections, barrels and clean tropical waves, with conditions varying considerably between regions, seasons and individual breaks.
North Malé Atoll is the country's best-known and most accessible surfing region, home to internationally recognised breaks including Cokes, Chickens, Sultans and Jailbreaks. Further south, Laamu and Huvadhoo offer a more remote surfing experience, with renowned waves such as Yin Yang, Five Islands, Beacons and Love Charms.
Surfing here is not only for advanced surfers. Beginners can learn in suitable lagoons and gentler conditions, while experienced surfers can join guided sessions, travel by boat between breaks or plan multi-day surf safaris in search of waves across different atolls.
Conditions change with swell, wind, tide and location, so choosing the right break for your ability and travelling with knowledgeable local operators can make a significant difference to the experience.
